CISPA, SCHMISPA

Throughout the U.S. Government there have been any iterations of the same bill and sentiment, online privacy. Recently two controversial bills; SOPA & PIPA have been debated and not passed due to public outcry and backlash.

Now we have CISPA, this the younger (watered down) sibling of SOPA & PIPA. CISPA no longer penalizes files sharing or holds copyright-infringers accountable for pilfered property. Although this Act does authorize the private sector to share information with the Federal Government, if you are suspected of any cyber crime.

I believe in the freedom of the Internet and I completely believe that something has to be done to safeguard private information in the public-age. Should this bill kill online file sharing? NO (I don't think that it would be a bad idea). Does this bill need to protect personal information and public infrastructure from improper use? YES! Does the public need to be more sensible with the information we published on the Internet? YES!

Loan Interest?

Student loan interest rates have been declining by one percentage point per year since 2009 (6.8%). Their currently level (3.4%) is being debated in the U.S. Congress, on whether or not this current interest rate should remain as the perminant student loan rate. This is bound to become a hot-button issue with dueling political parties vieing for the hearts and minds of the American youth vote. The incumbant President and the republican candidate are in agreeance on keeping the interest rate at its reduced amount indefinitly.

Although each candidate had taken the side of the students, their respecitve parties will debate these issues until November, hoping to give eachother a blackeye for being anti-student or education. Ironically Education is the first item cut in most bipartisan governments, when the going gets tough.

We are not the only online nation

I recently read an article in the San Francisco Chronicle about the burgeioning Russian online/new media scene. This article highlights for me the importance of constant growth within online media.
